Hufflepuff Colors: Yellow and Black
Hufflepuff Colors

Colours can tell a lot about a person, place or thing. We can tell a persons feeling or emotions by the colours they choose to ware. Some common ones are red for passion, purple for royalty and white for purity or innocents. Alas, as so many diehard Harry Potter fans do, I will look deep in to something that probably will make no farther since or use in the series, the Hufflepuff hue’s, and discover their true meaning and connections to the Hufflepuffs I know so well. Now, as we all know, each Hogwarts house (Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, Slytherin and Ravenclaw) is associated with 2 colours. Today, and seeing as this is a Hufflepuff site, we will be looking in on Hufflepuffs colours, which are yellow and black.

Yellow and how it ties in to Hufflepuff

Yellow is one of the easiest colours to decipher. From a simple point of view, it stands for everything happy. This may be true, but it stands for more then just ‘happy’. Let’s use some more grown up words to describe yellow.

Yellow is the color of sunshine (I feel more grown up already x_x). It's associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy. Yellow produces a warming effect, arouses cheerfulness, stimulates mental activity, and generates muscle energy. Yellow is seen before other colors when placed against black; this combination is often used to issue a warning. In heraldry, yellow indicates honor and loyalty. Most usually perceive yellow as a very lighthearted, 'childish' color. Yellow is an unstable and spontaneous color, so avoid using yellow if you want to suggest stability and safety.

Now, let’s pick this apart line by line. It's associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy. This indicates that Hufflepuffs are very well-rounded people. From the ‘Puffs we see in the books, we can tell they just possess an aura of well being. Yellow produces a warming effect, arouses cheerfulness, stimulates mental activity, and generates muscle energy. That supports what I just said. And as for the muscle stimulation stuff…wow, I’m trying ever so hard to keep a clean mind right now. Ok, this next line is my favorite. Yellow is seen before other colors when placed against black; this combination is often used to issue a warning. This could mean several things. JKR could have done this because Hufflepuff may hold a secret or clue to how to finally defeat Voldemort. We know that Hufflepuffs cup was a horcrux, but maybe something more. So it’s flashing a huge WARNING sign to attract Harry’s attention. It could also mean that just because JKR is writing amazing books does not mean that she lacks a since of color coordination. In heraldry, yellow indicates honor and loyalty. That’s what Hufflepuff stands for, very obvious. Most usually perceive yellow as a very lighthearted, 'childish' color. This is true, but my no means does it say that Hufflepuffs are any less intelligent then Ravenclaws. It simply means that Hufflepuffs are here to have a good time, no matter what. Yellow is an unstable and spontaneous color, so avoid using yellow if you want to suggest stability and safety. I love this line to, because along with it suggesting Hufflepuff is a very random house, it says that it is spontaneous in the since that it may accept somebody into its house, but that person seems like, say, a Slytherin. I love Hufflepuff and how it’s just so accepting, and this backs it up.

Black and How It Ties In To Hufflepuff

The second colour of Hufflepuff is black, therefore… Black is a mysterious color associated with fear and the unknown (black holes). It usually has a negative connotation (blacklist, black humor, 'black death'). Black denotes strength and authority; it is considered to be a very formal, elegant, and prestigious color (black tie, black Mercedes). In heraldry, black is the symbol of grief. Black gives the feeling of perspective and depth, but a black background diminishes readability. A black suit or dress can make you look thinner.

Again, let’s pull this apart line by line. Black is a mysterious color associated with fear and the unknown (black holes). This is very well to go along with Hufflepuff, as there is very little known about the house, unlike Gryffindor, where more is known as the main characters are in this house. Black denotes strength and authority, this is 50/50, because Hufflepuff has strength, but authority? Not really. Hufflepuffs do not demand and get the respect, or authority, that they deserve. In heraldry, black is the symbol of grief. Ever notices how many people are threatened with death/died/had family who have died that belong to Hufflepuff house? Cedric Diggory, Susan Bones’s aunt, Hannah Abbott’s mother…just to name a few. Black gives the feeling of perspective and depth, but a black background diminishes readability. I’m interested in the last part of this. In modern culture, are not black people discriminated because of there background? Same thing in Harry Potter. If you’re not pureblood, you’re looked down upon. Hufflepuff is the house where it just does. Not. Matter. A black suit or dress can make you look thinner. Well, just proves that Hufflepuffs look marvelous doesn’t it?
